Stratford High Street: green inverted roof

Introduction

The London housing association, Genesis Housing Group, re-developed a former light industrial site to create six mixed-use, mixed-tenure buildings ranging between two and 43-storeys to provide a total of 704 homes.

This high profile scheme is located at the principal entrance to the Olympic Park, at 150 High Street, Stratford. As well as homes, it provides an Extra Care Unit, affordable commercial and retail units, car and cycle parking, a children’s play space and a riverside walkway.

"Jablite Flat Roof Inverted insulation was perfect for this project, because it is supplied in incremental thicknesses to provide any specified U-value and it works well with green roofs."

Sustainability

A CHP plant, biomass boilers, rainwater harvesting and green insulated roofs have all been incorporated into the scheme; together with considerable areas of water attenuation on the 1.3-hectare Thames-side site, they combine to create a sustainable project.

Jablite Flat Roof Inverted Insulation

The roofs were designed and specified by Radmat Building Product, Jake Watkins, explains why he chose Jablite Flat Roof Inverted insulation, “Energy efficiency is a key element in all our sustainability planning for the roofs we design.

“Jablite Flat Roof Inverted insulation was perfect for this project, because it is supplied in incremental thicknesses to provide any specified U-value and it works well with green roofs.”

Jablite Flat Roof Inverted insulation is manufactured from a modified EPS (expanded polystyrene) bead which makes it resistant to moisture and therefore suitable for use on inverted flat roofs.

It is designed to be easy to install – a decisive factor as Jake explains: “Importantly for a project of this size, Jablite Flat Roof Inverted insulation can be quickly and easily installed – it comes in lightweight, 1200mm x 1200mm overlapping sheets that are strong enough to be walked during the installation.

“Jablite is available in increments of 5mm from 100mm to 250mm and is supplied for single layer installation – this reduces the amount of waste material and eliminates the need to glue layers together – on or off site.

“For this project the insulation boards were 200mm to achieve our required U-value of 0.16w/m2k,” concludes Jake.

Jablite provided a site collection recycling service to collect offcuts and recycle them back into insulation board.
