Doesn’t EPS perform poorly in a fire?
No. Jablite products are available Euroclass E, containing flame retardant additives. We hold third party independent test reports and data which are available via our Technical Department on request.
What are the elemental U-values for England, Scotland and Wales?
Target U-values for domestic buildings in England and Wales are 0.2W/m²K in roofs insulated at rafter level, 0.16W/m²K in roofs insulated at horizontal ceiling level, 0.3W/m²K in walls and 0.22W/m²K in floors.
In Scotland there is a two tier system according to the efficiency of the boiler.
For oil boilers with a minimum SEDBUK rating of 85%, natural gas boilers with a rating of 78% and LPG boilers with a rating of 80% the requirements are as above with the exception of flat roofs and floors where the requirement is 0.25W/m²K.
For boilers below those ratings, the requirements are 0.18W/m²K in roofs insulated at rafter level, 0.16W/m²K in roofs insulated at horizontal ceiling level, 0.27W/m²K in walls and 0.22W/m²K in flat roofs and floors.
SEDBUK is the Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK.

Do Jablite have a product suitable for inverted roofs?
Yes. Jablite has developed a specific product for inverted roof applications called Jablite Flat Roof Inverted (FRI). Jablite FRI is manufactured from a special bead with very low water absorbency (less than 1%) which is a key requirement for inverted roofs.
In addition Jablite FRI is
- Available in larger panels than alternative insulants for faster installation
- Available in different thicknesses so only a single piece is required meaning faster installation
Can Jablite EPS be exposed to the ground?
Yes. EPS can be placed below or above the damp poof membrane. Because it is inert it can also be used in the ground in civil engineering applications without the risk of any leeching.
Can Jablite EPS be used in fully filled cavities?
Yes. Jablite has developed Jabfill, a product specially designed for fully filling masonry cavities. Jabfill is tongue and grooved to ensure moisture is not transmitted across the cavity. It also has an external profile that aids moisture run off and prevents insulation becoming damp.
Can Jablite EPS continue below the damp proof course?
Yes. Jablite EPS can continue below the damp proof course.
Can down lighters be recessed into Jablite EPS?
No, down lighters should not be recessed into insulated ceilings as they penetrate the vapour control layer (VCL) and act like a flue, drawing warm moist air into the roof space where it condenses and drips back out of the fitting, possibly causing a fire risk.
If down lighters are to be used, they should be fitted in a false ceiling below the structural ceiling.
Can Jabfloor Classic and Jabfloor Premium be used in all floor applications?
Yes, Jabfloor Classic and Jabfloor Premium are the most versatile insulants for use in all floor specifications and are available in:
- A wide range of compressive strengths from 70kPa grade to 500kPa.
- A wide range of thicknesses
Can I recess services into Jablite EPS?
Yes. Services such as Electric Cables, Gas and Water Pipes etc should be installed in accordance with the relevant Byelaws or Regulations and wherever possible not through the insulation zone.
EPS should not be permitted to come into contact with PVC-sheathed electrical cables since this will lead to migration of plasticiser from the PVC resulting in brittle cable sheathing. Cables should be protected by the use of a physical barrier, for example by being enclosed in conduit or by an air gap. Hot water pipes should be no closer than 12mm to the EPS and lagged or haunched with sand and cement as appropriate depending on the application.
Can I insulate between and over my flat roof joists?
Jablite EPS can be installed above the flat roof deck, fully supported, creating a warm roof construction or between and below the joists creating a cold roof construction. Both roof types require sufficient ventilation to reduce the risk of interstitial condensation.
When using between the joists a 50mm ventilation gap must be left above the insulation.
Please contact our Technical Department if you are unsure as to the correct installation
What can I do if I have excessive glazing?
You are allowed 25% of the floor area as glazing plus any windows covered by the proposal if applicable. Excessive glazing can be compensated for by over-insulating the walls, roof and floor.
How can I avoid condensation risks?
Condensation is a process where water vapour contained within the atmosphere condenses into water. Condensation forms where warm air is in direct contact with a cool surface.
Condensation can form on visible surfaces like the inside surface of a wall or the inside surface of a single glazed window.
It is possible for condensation to form within the structure of a building and this is known as interstitial condensation. For example it may form on the roof timbers or within the structure of a wall if precautions are not taken.
As thermal insulation standards have risen the risk of condensation has been increased. For example if your loft is highly insulated the loft area will be very cold in winter - this in turn increases the risk of condensation forming on the underside of roof felt or the roof tiles/slates.
Condensation can be controlled with the following methods:
- Vapour control layer - a material with a high resistance to passage of water vapour e.g. polyethylene membrane. The principal is to stop moisture reaching the cold side of the insulation - where it could meet cold air and condense.
- Ventilation - a ventilated cavity left on the cold side of the insulation. Any vapour reaching the area quickly dissipates before it can condense e.g. a traditional cold roof construction.
- Good design - Careful design can minimise condensation risk. A warm frame construction can be created by placing insulation outside of a steel warm frame thus reducing the risk of condensation forming on studs.
The Jablite Technical Department can give advice and provide condensation risk analysis to ensure compliance with building regulations.
Can Jablite provide U-value calculations?
Yes. All of the Jablite Technical Department are trained to carry out U-value calculations in accordance with BR443 Conventions for U-value Calculations and ISO 6946.
How does Jablite Premium material perform better than Jablite Classic?
Jablite Premium technology increases thermal performance by approximately 20% over Jablite Classic of identical grade. Jablite introduces graphite particles into the cell structure of conventional EPS via an extrusion process; these particles reflect infra-red radiation and thereby heat, creating a superior performing material.
